Respect is the foundation of Ahtna life. We honor our elders, our families, our ancestors, the Creator (Nek’eltaeni), and all living things. Humans are part of nature, not separate from it.

Unity & Community

We work together as one team. Unity means sharing resources, supporting one another, and strengthening our community through cooperation and kindness.

Stewardship

We care for our lands, waters, wildlife, and plants so future generations will have what they need. Stewardship is a responsibility passed down from our ancestors and rooted in traditional knowledge.

Honesty & Integrity

We do what is right, even when it is difficult. Integrity builds trust within our Tribe and ensures fairness in our decisions and actions.

Reciprocity

Ahtna people take only what is needed and give back to the land and animals. Hunting, fishing, and gathering are spiritual, social, and cultural responsibilities.

Care & Love

We care for our families, elders, youth, and community members. Love is shown through helping, sharing, and supporting one another.

Diligence & Hard Work

Hard work is essential for providing for our families and maintaining our way of life. This value is reflected in subsistence, cultural practices, and community responsibilities.

Subsistence as a Way of Life

Hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering are central to Ahtna identity. Subsistence is cultural, spiritual, economic, and essential to our survival.

Passing Knowledge Forward

Ahtna values are taught through stories, language, land based learning, and hands on experience. We continue these teachings through youth programs, cultural activities, and community events.
